Typhoon Lounge began in 1996 with three friends, three cities, and one shared dream.
Greg
Greg was living in Taiwan, inspired by the rising bubble tea culture and its bold, creative approach to drinks.
Mike
Mike was in Budapest, immersed in the rhythm of European cafés, where atmosphere and conversation come first.
Frank
Frank dreamed of building a true neighbourhood bar - a place where everyone feels at home.
When they reunited in Monkland Village, they set out to create something different:
A space that felt worldly, yet local. Relaxed, yet exciting. Familiar, yet unforgettable.
Typhoon originally opened as a specialty tea-based cocktail bar - something entirely new to Montreal at the time. The first year was quiet. Word spread slowly. Then, almost overnight, everything changed.
Suddenly, it was wall to wall. Every night.
By our third year, we took another bold step:
We built a full kitchen and shifted our focus toward gourmet burgers and elevated lounge cuisine. At a time when few neighbourhood bars were doing anything like it, Typhoon became a trendsetter - raising expectations for what bar food could be.
Those original ideas became a signature. And to this day, we’re proud to continue serving our lineup of handcrafted, gourmet 8oz burgers - the same spirit of creativity and quality that defined us from the start.
Live music & community:
Live bands once filled the room three nights a week. The energy was electric. As the neighbourhood evolved, so did we — transitioning from live bands to DJs and curated late-night experiences, always with respect for our community.
Over time, Typhoon became more than a bar. It became a meeting place. A second living room. A place where first dates turned into relationships, and relationships turned into marriages.
Today, Typhoon is known for its handcrafted cocktails and gourmet lounge cuisine - served in an atmosphere that’s both chill and cozy, and loud and fun when the night takes over.
Open every night until 3AM, we remain a go-to destination for late-night conversations, celebrations, and unforgettable moments.
Nearly 30 years later, Typhoon is still proudly owned and operated by its founders - Greg, Mike, and Frank - a testament to their commitment, passion, and belief in what this place represents.
